Lets talk about sex

 

Hello everyone. Welcome back to my blog. I wanted to state that what I talk about is my opinion and I never expect someone to agree with me. I wanted to talk about something that didn’t sit right with me this week. I was in my class for family relations and my teacher was talking about couples having sex and the bonding that is causes, however he did not call it sex, he called it love making. He referred to it as love making every time. I personally think it is so important to call sex, sex and not give it a different name. As a child development major, I think about how it is so important that we teach children the correct terminology for their body parts. Also, as a member of the church of Jesus Christ of the latter-day saints I think it is important to call sex what it is. In my religion it is common for couples to not have sex until after marriage. Because of this sex is a taboo topic that no one wants to talk about. In my religion they do talk about the importance of sex and how that can lead to creating a family and how it is important for couples to have sex after marriage, but that’s all they talk about sex. Some teens get the talk from their parents when they are younger, and I think that’s great. My parents never did that for me. I learned about sex from tv shows, movies, and the fact that I had older siblings. I grew up with two older sisters, and I have no brothers. It wasn’t until junior high that I knew what happened to boys when they went through puberty. I think it is so important for parents to talk to their children about sex and their body parts and name them correctly. We are the next generation to be parents and I think we can do better at this with our children. I was talking to my aunt about this topic. She has a daughter who is eleven and she is showing signs that she might start her period soon. I had a conversation with my cousin, while her mother (my aunt), was there. I asked her if she knew what it meant to get her period. She said it was when blood came out of your vagina. I told her that was true, but there was more to that. I asked her if she knew why that happened and she said no. I was going to explain to her why that happens, and my aunt interrupted me. My aunt explained that she did not want me to tell her why and that she didn’t need to know. My eleven cousin left the room and I told my aunt that her daughter has a right to know what is going to happen to her body and why that happens. My aunt did not agree with me on this. When I was working in a preschool, I heard a story from another teacher who had a student who told the teachers that her uncle touched her cookie. The teachers were confused and brushed it off. She had mentioned it a couple days in a row that her uncle touched her cookie. The teachers still had no idea what the child was talking about. A few weeks after that, they were notified that the child had been touched inappropriate by her uncle. The family referred to the child’s vagina as a cookie. Had they taught the child the proper terms for the vagina the teachers could have intervened and gotten the child/family the help they needed sooner. Therefore I think it is so important to teach children the proper terms for their body parts and to normalize sex.
